BLACKMAIL ALLEGATIONS OVER SITA’S TIP PLANS

09:00 – 29 May 2008

Labour politicians have accused SITA of ‘bribery and blackmail’ over plans to keep the tip at United Downs, St Day, open for a further two years.
Parliamentary candidate Jude Robinson said: “SITA is offering £1 million to local people.”It says that the promised landscaping will not be done if they don’t agree.
“How can the county council claim there will be no pressure on people to agree to it?

“I know many people would find it hard to face the thought of four or five more years of the landfill site, which should have closed eight years ago.”

Mark Kaczmarek, the area’s county and district councillor, said he was against the tip staying open.

“I have been given assurances by the county council that if the parish councils, who they are consulting with, decide to throw out this offer then it will go no further.”

SITA is offering £1 million to the local community if it can continue to operate the tip, which is due to close in 2010, for another two years.

Company boss Louis de Poncheville said: “I have to spend the £1 million anyway so I thought it would make sense to offer it to the communities.

“If they agree and we can prolong the lifetime of land-filling for the county, it would be very useful.”
